This piece was done in my work for the Illinois Water Resources Center (IWRC). This fact sheet showcases the accomplishments of the IWRC and how previous funding has been used to plan, facilitate, and conduct research on regional water problems and technologies. This fact sheet was part of an effort to request continued funding from federal representatives of Illinois in Washington, DC, as well as the University of Illinois’s Vice Chancellor of Research. As a result of this initiative, Congress increased funding for all water research institutes by 33% for the next funding cycle.

A poster titled "Wealth vs Wins". The text of the poster reads "This data visualization is comparing the medals that countries won at the Olympics to their GDP per capita. The goal of putting these data side by side was to see how the wealth available in a country impacts the performance of the athletes, and therefore if wealthier countries have an unfair advantage. I was surprised to find that the GDP per capita and the number of medals don't correlate as much as I thought they would. For example China, who has the second most total medals and is tied with the USA for the most gold medals, is 45th in the rankings of GDP per capita among the countries that won medals. And Ireland, who only won 7 medals, had the highest GDP per capita in the dataset. Interestingly, total GDP correlated more strongly with medals won. This, I suppose, might be because higher population might correlate with total medals won, and countries with higher populations have greater reductions from total GDP to GDP per capita compared to countries with smaller populations." Wealth vs Wins PDF + Data

The text of the poster reads "This data visualization is comparing the times of the competitors in the Men's Lightweight Double Sculls races that Ireland, the gold medal winner of this event, participated in. The three races depicted are Heat 3, Semifinal A/B 1, and Final A. Lightweight Men's: The participants must each weight 70kg or less. For the women's division, they must weight 57kg or less. Double: Each boat has two rowers. Sculls: Each rower has two oars, as opposed to sweep where each rower only has one oar. Starting on July 28th, the initial heats were run. On the 29th, the repechages, a second chance for teams to qualify for the semifinals if they didn’t qualify in the heats, were run. On the 31st, final C was run, followed by the semifinals. On August 2nd, finals A and B were run. Final A determines the rankings for the top 6 teams of the semifinals, final B for the next 6 teams of the semifinals, and so on." The data is linked below.

These pieces were done for my data visualization class. I chose the color palette from the Paris Olympics’ image library. In the Wealth vs Wins map there was a challengingly large amount of data to represent, so I wrote a Python script to generate the element SVGs and put them together in Adobe Illustrator. In the Ireland in Rowing visualization,  I echoed the tilt of the boat in the Olympics’ rowing pictogram with my graphs.

IPC Newsletter

This piece was done for my typographic systems class. The project was to design and typeset a newsletter for the International Panorama Council (IPC), with the content provided but the design up to us. I prioritized consistency in my approach, with the idea being that if I was actually being commissioned, my design specs might be handed to someone with less design experience than me. I also wanted the design to not be too tailored to the specific content, so that it could be used for future newsletters. The color scheme of red and teal was based on the cover image, and future newsletters could change the colors to give each month’s newsletter a unique identity, despite the simple design.
