Captain Hue

2024

Paper cutout, paint markers

This piece was an assignment for my fashion illustration class. The outfit is based on the Moschino Pre-Fall 2022 Collection, though the design is my own. That Moschino collection reminded me of the design from my favorite Beatles era, Sgt. Pepper and Yellow Submarine, so I was drawn to it and excited to create my own illustration based on it. I sketched the design digitally, then blocked out the main shapes and cut them out of paper. I glued these shapes onto a background paper, and then outlined them and filled in details using black marker. I finished by splattering some paint onto the canvas, using the colors of the outfit. The background was made using Adobe Firefly’s image generation.

Cutout Study

2021

Adobe Photoshop

This piece was an assignment for my composition class. The style was inspired by a paper cutout technique used in a previous assignment, and it challenged me to pay attention to where important value changes happened in a form. I experimented with different color temperatures and contrasts, and found I liked warm tones for the face and cool tones for the hair the best.

Abstract Peacocks

2023

Adobe Illustrator

This piece was done for my abstract art class. The goal was to choose a subject, and depict it with increasing levels of abstraction. I chose a peacock, as I thought the variety of different patterns present in the bird’s plumage would be great elements to use in higher levels of abstraction. While eye imagery was an obvious choice due to the pattern on the tail feathers, I found it more interesting to place the eye pattern on the wing area.

Mind Journey

2021

Adobe Illustrator

This piece was done for my composition class. I used the lyrics from Dan Deacon’s song “When I Was Done Dying” and warped them to the contours of a brain. I felt that the frantic run-on sound of the song would fit well on the winding branches of a brain’s wrinkles, especially as the song is about a hallucinatory journey of death and rebirth. The background is from the song’s chorus, an unceasing chant that I felt was perfect to be the background for this piece.

Drop-Cap Letter

2023

Adobe Illustrator

This piece was done as a project my intro to typography class did for UIUC’s Ricker Library, creating drop-cap letters to be used as stickers, bookmarks, and posters in the windows of the library. I did the letter Y, and I built on the swoops of the letter for a 60’s-style design.

Gabriel Collection

2024

Adobe Photoshop

This piece was done for my fashion illustration class. It is a fashion plate for a collection based on the Mexican crooner Juan Gabriel, whose flamboyant outfits absolutely floored me and left me excited to make art inspired by them. Like Gabriel’s outfits, I pulled from traditional Mexican garments like Serapes as well as Mexican-American classic western styles. I decided to use flat shapes in this piece to allow the patterns and textures room to breathe.
